FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Everything You Need to Know
Before Your Treatment

From what to wear to how mobile appointments work, here are answers to some of the questions I’m asked most often.

1 - What happens at my first appointment?

Your first appointment will begin with a consultation and assessment so I can get a clear understanding of what has brought you to treatment. We’ll discuss your symptoms, medical history, lifestyle, activity levels and any previous or current injuries, as well as what you would like to achieve from your treatment. Where appropriate, I may also carry out simple movement, mobility or functional assessments to help identify areas of restriction, muscular tension or discomfort. I’ll then explain the most appropriate treatment approach before we begin. Your treatment will be tailored specifically to you, and I’ll check in with you throughout the session to make sure you are comfortable with the techniques and pressure being used. For future appointments, we can review how your body responded to the previous treatment and adapt the session accordingly.

2 - Do I need to be an athlete to have a sports massage?

Not at all. Despite the name, sports massage isn’t just for athletes or people who regularly play sport. I work with people of different ages, occupations and activity levels. You might be training for an event, regularly going to the gym, working in a physically demanding job, spending long hours sitting at a desk, or simply experiencing muscular tension, stiffness or restricted movement from everyday life. Sports massage techniques can be adapted depending on what you need from the session, whether that’s supporting recovery from exercise, helping manage muscular tension, improving mobility or simply helping your body feel and move better. Every appointment is individual, so your treatment will be based on your body, your symptoms and your goals, rather than your level of sporting activity.

3 - Is sports massage painful?

Sports massage can sometimes feel quite intense, particularly when working on areas that are tight, sensitive or have been causing discomfort. However, treatment should never feel unnecessarily painful. I’ll communicate with you throughout your appointment and adjust the pressure and techniques according to your comfort level and how your body responds. Some areas may naturally feel more tender than others, but the aim is to work at an appropriate level rather than simply applying as much pressure as possible. More pressure doesn’t necessarily mean a better treatment. If anything feels uncomfortable at any point, just let me know and I can immediately adjust the treatment.

4 - What should I wear for my appointment?

I recommend wearing comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows you to move easily, particularly if your appointment includes movement or mobility assessments. Depending on the area being treated, you may need to remove some clothing so I can safely and effectively access the relevant muscles. For example, shorts can be particularly useful when treating the legs, hips or lower body. You will always be appropriately covered, and only the area being treated will be exposed where necessary. Your comfort, dignity and privacy will always be respected throughout your appointment. If you’re unsure what to wear for a particular treatment, feel free to ask when booking and I can advise you beforehand.

5 - Do I need to provide anything for a mobile appointment?

No — one of the benefits of my mobile service is that I bring the treatment to you. I’ll bring my professional massage table and the equipment needed for your treatment. All I ask is that you provide a suitable indoor space where the massage table can be safely set up, with enough room around it for me to move and work comfortably. Some clients prefer to provide their own towel or blanket to use as a drape, particularly if this helps them feel more comfortable during the appointment. You’re very welcome to do this. Ideally, the treatment area should be warm, reasonably quiet and free from anything that could restrict access around the massage table. Before your appointment, it can also be helpful to have comfortable clothing available and to let me know about anything that may affect access to your property or where I can park. Then you can simply relax and enjoy the convenience of receiving your treatment in your own home.

6 - What areas do you cover?

I provide mobile sports massage therapy throughout Neath, Port Talbot, Swansea and surrounding areas, bringing professional treatment directly to your home. My standard service area covers locations within approximately a 25 km radius of Neath, with travel within this area included in the price of your appointment. If you live outside the 25 km radius, please still get in touch. Depending on your location and my availability, I may be able to travel further. Where additional travel is required, I’ll always let you know about any additional charge before your appointment is confirmed. If you're unsure whether your location falls within my standard service area, simply send me your postcode via WhatsApp and I’ll be happy to check for you.

7 - How long should I book?

The best appointment length depends on what you would like treated, how many areas need attention and what you would like to achieve from the session. For most clients, a 60-minute appointment provides enough time to assess your needs and work thoroughly on one or more areas without feeling rushed. A shorter appointment may be suitable when focusing on one specific area or for a targeted follow-up treatment. A 90-minute appointment can be a better choice when several areas need attention, you have multiple areas of muscular tension, or you would like a more comprehensive treatment. Your first appointment may also require additional time for consultation and assessment. If you're unsure which appointment length to choose, just get in touch and tell me what you're experiencing. I’ll recommend the most suitable option before you book.

8 - How often should I have a massage?

There isn't a set schedule that works for everyone. How often you may benefit from sports massage depends on your individual needs, activity levels, symptoms, goals and how your body responds to treatment. Someone experiencing a particular muscular issue or going through a period of intensive training may benefit from appointments closer together initially. Other clients may choose less frequent appointments as part of their ongoing recovery, mobility or general maintenance routine. Rather than automatically recommending regular appointments, I prefer to assess how you respond to treatment and discuss what is appropriate for you. The aim is to provide treatment when it is beneficial and appropriate, rather than encouraging you to book more often than you need to.

9 - Can massage help with an injury or medical condition?

Massage therapy may be helpful in managing muscular tension, stiffness, discomfort and restricted movement, as well as supporting recovery and general wellbeing for some people living with injuries or medical conditions. However, every situation is different. Before treatment, I’ll ask about your medical history, current symptoms, medication and any relevant diagnosis so I can determine whether massage is appropriate and how the treatment may need to be adapted. Sports massage therapy does not replace medical diagnosis, physiotherapy or treatment from a qualified healthcare professional. If your symptoms suggest that massage may not be appropriate, or I believe further assessment is needed, I may recommend that you speak to your GP, physiotherapist or another appropriate healthcare professional before proceeding. If you have an existing medical condition and you're unsure whether massage is suitable, you're very welcome to contact me before booking so we can discuss your circumstances.

10 - How do I book an appointment?

Booking is simple. You can contact me directly by WhatsApp, phone or email to arrange your appointment. When getting in touch, it’s helpful to tell me a little about what you’re experiencing, the area you'd like help with, your location and your preferred days or times. This allows me to recommend the most appropriate treatment and appointment length and check my availability in your area. If you're not sure which treatment to choose, you don't need to decide before contacting me. Tell me what you're experiencing and what you'd like help with, and I’ll be happy to discuss the options with you. Once we’ve agreed on the most appropriate appointment, I’ll confirm the details with you. Not sure where to start? Send me a WhatsApp message and we can take it from there.

11 - What happens after my treatment?

After your treatment, I’ll discuss how the session went and any relevant findings with you. Where appropriate, I may also suggest simple mobility exercises, stretches or self-management strategies that you can use between appointments to support your recovery and maintain the benefits of treatment. It’s normal for some people to experience temporary tenderness or mild soreness following a massage, particularly after treatment of tight or sensitive areas. This will usually settle naturally. I’ll explain what you can expect following your individual treatment and advise you if there is anything specific I would like you to do or avoid. As part of my aftercare, I’ll send you a follow-up message within 24–72 hours of your appointment to see how you have responded to the treatment. This helps me understand how your body has reacted and allows us to make any appropriate adjustments to future sessions. If we're working towards a particular goal, we can also discuss whether a follow-up appointment may be beneficial and when it would be most appropriate.
